ERS device: parameters configuration

If you want to change the ERS devices parameters, you can do it either by an Android or iOS application.

Introduction

ERS devices (Desk, Meeting room, Environmental, Sound) are the integral part of our Workplace+ Solution Accelerator.  Although, for the battery longevity, a default update interval, where a device sends its data to the ALSO IoT Platform is set to 5 min (or 300 seconds), respectively. If you want to change these settings, please follow the guidelines in this document.

Warning: ERS devices will not work properly for the update interval < 1 min! A strong recommendation is to keep the interval greater or equal to 5 min.

iOS Application

You can download the iOS application here. Now, let's get started with changing the device's update interval.

Note: For a better insight into the ERS device parameters,  you can find the manufacturer's NFC settings specifications here.

  1. Open the NFC Tools application,
  2. Firstly, make sure that you have NFC turned on in your iPhone. Then, scan an ERS device with your iPhone/iPad with the NFC antenna, by clicking the "Read" button. The correct position of an iPhone on top of the ERS device is shown in the image below. If this doesn't work, try to change the position of your smartphone until it gets the notification to update the sensor dataset. This is due to that smartphone manufacturers place the NFC antenna on different location within a device.

  3. Once scanned, you can enter the Record 0 - Text section. Within, you'll see the "SplPer: 300" text that confirms the default update interval of 300 seconds (5 minutes).  The update interval has to be written in seconds.

Now, let us change the update interval to e.g. 1 minute.

  1. Once you have successfully scanned the ERS device with the NFC tag, click on the Write section to change the update interval,
  2.  Click on Add a record,
  3. Choose the Text option on the top of the list,
  4. When opened, write "SplPer:60" in the textbox. This will set the update interval to 1 minute. Confirm with pressing OK in the upper right,
  5. You see the new Text entry which is now ready to be written in your device by NFC,
  6. Now click on Write / 16 Bytes button to enable the change of this parameter,
  7. Move the device close to the ERS device's NFC antenna and wait both the beep sound and the confirmation of updating the device parameters,
  8. Congratulations! Your ERS device update interval has been changed to 1 minute.

Note: Once updated, scan your device again with the NFC and go to the "Read" section to confirm that the "SplPer"  is written successfully.

Configure Update Interval and Sensitivity

If you're configuring ERS Desk with the iOS app, these are the settings that work rather nice:

  • PIR sensitivity:
    • 1 - Medium
    • 2 - High
    • Therefore, type PirSens:2 within the "Write" section
  • Update Interval :
    • Type SplPer: 65 within the "Write" section

Pro Tip: For demoing and fast changes, 65 seconds update interval works great. Although, it'd be good to increase it on at least on 180 seconds after the presentation, to preserve the battery life.

Caution: If you change the update interval of an ERS device to less than 5 minutes, it will drain the battery faster. Performing this action is your own responsibility.

Android Application

Download the Sensor Settings application for Android devices here.  For changing the update interval to 1 minute as shown in the previous example, follow the procedure below.

Do check out the official documentation about the Sensor Settings application here

  1. Firstly, make sure that you have NFC turned on in your Android device. Open the Sensor Settings application and scan your ERS device with the NFC antenna. You will receive the question "Update dataset? (yes/no)". Confirm this step by choosing "yes" answer.
  2. Change the Timebase value to 60. You'll get a "Warning: low value" text in red colour. This is due to the intention to preserve the battery life due to the optimal update interval.
  3. Confirm this operation with the WRITE button. Choose "yes" when prompted. Be aware to put the Android device on top of your ERS device as instructed below. If this doesn't work, try to change the position of your smartphone until it gets the notification to update the sensor dataset. This is due to that smartphone manufacturers place the NFC antenna on different location within a device.

Configure Update Interval and Sensitivity

If you're working with the Android app:
  • Scan your ERS device with the Sensor Settings App and with the NFC on your phone,
  • Click on "Advanced" tab and select "PIR Sensitivity" as "High" from the dropdown menu
  • Click on the WRITE button on the top left and scan the ERS Desk with your NFC phone's antenna
  • You can also change update interval at the "Timebase" section, if you want.
